Taking your child to the dentist for the first time can be a little stressful – but it’s actually the start of a journey toward a healthy smile for life. At Madaras Dental, we want the first visit to be positive, fun, and educational for both you and your child.

When to Come for the First Visit

It’s best to visit the dentist within six months of the first tooth appearing, or at the latest by the child’s first birthday.

Even if no teeth have erupted yet, a visit can be helpful to learn how to care for your child’s gums and future teeth.

Early visits help your child get used to the dental office environment and build trust with the dentist.

How to Brush Your Child’s Teeth

  • Use a soft, small toothbrush designed for babies. For the first teeth, you can brush without toothpaste or with a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

  • Brush twice a day, especially before bedtime.

  • For children over 2 years, you can use a slightly larger amount of fluoride toothpaste, but always supervise to ensure all teeth are cleaned thoroughly.

Healthy Eating Habits

  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks between meals.

  • Encourage water, milk, fruits, and vegetables.

  • After sweets or acidic foods, rinse your child’s mouth with water to protect the enamel.

Preparing Your Child for the Dental Visit

  • Speak about the dentist positively – avoid words like “pain” or “injection.”

  • Play “dentist” at home – let your child brush a doll’s teeth or yours to get used to the routine.

  • The first visit is usually short and playful, focused on making the child feel comfortable rather than performing treatments.

Dental X-Rays for Children

X-rays are only taken when necessary, for example, to check for hidden cavities or monitor tooth development.

If needed, we always use the lowest possible radiation dose and protect the child with a lead apron.

Why Preventive Visits Are Important

  • Early visits help catch cavities before they become serious.

  • Children learn the importance of daily oral hygiene.

  • Parents receive guidance on nutrition and brushing teeth and gums.

  • Regular visits reduce the risk of painful or costly procedures later.

👉 Madaras Dental Tip: Schedule the first preventive visit shortly after the first tooth appears. An early visit helps your child get comfortable with the dentist and lays the foundation for a healthy smile for life.
